The Vancouver Chamber Choir and Artistic Director Jon Washburn have drawn their 42nd concert season to a close with the performance of YOUTH AND MUSIC and winner announcements of the 2013 Young Composers' Competition.

 

The Vancouver Chamber Choir gives outstanding support to the growth and development of talented young musicians. This year's competition finalists came from across North America and were selected from 61 pieces submitted worldwide. The judges were composer Larry Nickel, conductor Kevin Zakresky and Vancouver Chamber Choir Conductor and Artistic Director Jon Washburn. Each 1st and 2nd Prize piece was performed by the Vancouver Chamber Choir prior to winner announcements.

 

Elementary (Ages 8 - 12)

Honourable Mention Daygan Olsson Shall I Fly With the Wind?

 

A participation award was given to Langley Fine Arts School for submitting the most compositions. As a special and well received feature in the concert programme, soloists from the choir performed five pieces submitted by Robyn Lorensen's Grade 5 music class at the school. The selected student compositions were:

 

• Karl DeJong My Dog Kipper
• Samera Meyer Deogie
• Jasmine Robertson The Rainbow Song
• Sarah Stanley Space
• Ethan Strokon The Periodic Table

Dr. Who Fest

We are having a Dr. Who fest on Thursday, May 2nd from 4:00pm until approximately 9:30pm. It will take place in the woodshop theatre and will involve watching multiple episodes of Dr. Who.

Mrs. Lorensen’s Grade 5 Music News

I am overjoyed to announce that the Vancouver Chamber Choir has decided to feature five of our LFAS Grade 5 songs at their Youth & Music choral concert Friday April 19! 

 

Each song will be sung by a member of the Vancouver Chamber Choir. I would like to thank all the students who made such a dedicated effort to complete their very own song. So many of them could easily have been picked for this honour. 

 

The 5 children who will have their songs sung are:

• Sarah Stanley -Space 
• Ethan Strokon -The Periodic Table  

 Congratulations!

 

I would highly recommend this concert to anyone, but I would especially love to see many of the other grade 5 students get to enjoy this beautiful world-class choir and hear their friends' songs.

The students who attended two years ago had an absolutely terrific time. I hope many of you will be able to make it to share the evening together with us.

Grad 2013 Commencement and Dinner Dance Tickets

Senior Drama Ensemble is proud to present "The Importance of Being Earnest"

Senior Drama Ensemble is proud to present "The Importance of Being Earnest" written by Oscar Wilde.

The show is a trivial comedy about serious people. It is set in the 1890s and promises to be a bundle of chuckles. The plot revolves around two young men who assume a false identities but need to own up to the truth and as a result risk losing the women they love.

The performance is also a fundraiser for a young girl named Selena. She is a vivacious, beautiful, talented, dynamic little girl. This year she found out she had a life threatening disease called Friedreich's Ataxia - a progressive disease that affects every cell in her body. There is no cure.

I watched this incredibly brave family and amazing girl deal with the realities of this illness all year. She went from jumping up and leading cheers to a wheelchair within months... but it was purple.... her favorite colour. So she died the ends of her hair purple to match and continued to smile and yell.

They need to pay dearly for renovations to their house and medications. All of the Grade 12 students are in agreement that they would like to help. One evening show will be dedicated to Selena. She will be invited back stage, and will be the true star of the night. I am so touched by these senior students who eagerly offered to do all that they could. A bake sale will be outside the theatre in the evenings with all proceeds going to the same cause.
